<p>Last night, Mikhail became the majority owner for the New Jersey Nets. Coming into an off-season where Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and many other superstars are heading into free agency, the richest man in Russia couldn&#8217;t have stepped into the league at a better time.</p>
<p>Find out more about the newest NBA team owner after the jump.<br />
<span id="more-1419"></span></p>
<p><a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nba/news/story?id=5181478">ESPN NEW YORK</a> &#8212; The first step in what the New Jersey Nets hope is a quick turnaround is in place.</p>
<p>New owner Mikhail Prokhorov is eager to get started on the rest.</p>
<p>Prokhorov&#8217;s purchase of the team was approved Tuesday by NBA&#8217;s owners, who welcomed the first non-North American into their club. The financial transaction was closed at 12:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, the team announced in a statement.</p>
<p>Russia&#8217;s richest man agreed to buy 80 percent of the Nets and 45 percent of an arena project in Brooklyn from developer Bruce Ratner late last year. Final approval of the sale was delayed until the state of New York had taken over all the land seized under eminent domain at the site of the team&#8217;s Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The long-delayed 18,000-seat arena is to open in 2012.</p>
<p>&#8220;This much-anticipated day has finally come and now the real fun begins of building a championship team with a state-of-the-art home in the Barclays Center at Atlantic Yards,&#8221; Prokhorov said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a wonderful opportunity to combine great sports and good business, and I look forward to working with Bruce Ratner and Forest City and with the Nets organization as we move ahead.</p>
<p>&#8220;To the fans, whether in New Jersey, Brooklyn, or Moscow, I will do everything I can to give you a winning team. See you at the draft lottery.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Nets hope Prokhorov&#8217;s wealth &#8212; estimated at $9.5 billion through his banking and metals businesses &#8212; will be used to help them bounce back from a 12-70 finish that included an NBA-worst, 18-game losing streak to open the season.</p>
<div class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 308px"><img class="   " style="border: 2px solid black; margin: 5px;" src="http://thestartingfive.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/hov.jpg" alt="" width="298" height="369" /><p class="wp-caption-text">&quot;Jay-Z is also part owner of the Nets&quot;</p></div>
<p>The team was ruined by cost-cutting moves under Ratner, who signed off on the trades of Jason Kidd, Kenyon Martin, Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson. There&#8217;s money to spend now, with an estimated $23 million in salary cap room heading into free agency this summer, when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are among the players who could be available.</p>
<p>Prokhorov already has proven he can build a winning basketball team, owning a share of European power CSKA Moscow.</p>
<p>&#8220;We anticipate that his passion for the game and business acumen will be of considerable value not only to the Nets franchise but to the entire NBA,&#8221; commissioner David Stern said.</p>
<p>A person with knowledge of the voting results told The Associated Press that NBA owners voted 29-0 to approve the purchase. One team did not vote. The sale had to be approved by three-fourths of the NBA&#8217;s owners.</p>
<p>The person requested anonymity because the voting totals were not released.</p>
<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s vote will give the NBA a greater global reach and bring a multitude of new fans to the game of basketball,&#8221; Prokhorov said.&#8221;</p>
<p>The next step for the Nets comes next week with the NBA draft lottery, in which they have a 25 percent chance of winning to earn the No. 1 pick and can finish no worse than fourth. Stern previously predicted Prokhorov could represent the team at the lottery.</p>
<p>Prokhorov&#8217;s arrival in the NBA already has brought plenty of attention to the long-ignored franchise. The 6-foot-6 tycoon was an avid basketball player in his school days, is a fixture in glitzy European resorts and once was held in France for four days of questioning &#8212; but never charged &#8212; in a prostitution investigation.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s now at the front of a team that will spend the next two years playing in Newark before the anticipated move to Brooklyn. Prokhorov hopes he has built a winning team by then.</p>
<p>&#8220;Mikhail and his team will bring tremendous innovation and excitement to the NBA,&#8221; Ratner said.</p>

They&#8217;re all ridiculous numbers, but no one&#8217;s are more ridiculous than those of JaMarcus Russell.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.54em; font-size: 13px; padding: 0px;">Farmer also suggests that Russell was a bigger bust than even Ryan Leaf, but <a style="line-height: 1.22em; color: #0069aa; text-decoration: none;" href="http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/JaMarcus-Russell-A-challenger-to-Ryan-Leaf-s-th?urn=nfl,237173">I&#8217;ll defend JaMarcus on that one</a>. Leaf is head and shoulders above JaMarcus. If the Hall of Fame ever opens a special wing for the biggest draft disasters, it will be named the Ryan Leaf Center for Scaring The Bejeezus Out Of All Future Draft Prospects.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.54em; font-size: 13px; padding: 0px;">In total, Russell will pocket more than $39 million for his three years of work in Oakland. He&#8217;s already been paid $36 million of that, and the Raiders still owe him $3 million more.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.54em; font-size: 13px; padding: 0px;">But that&#8217;s the past. What&#8217;s important for JaMarcus is the future, and I&#8217;m sure that someone will give him another opportunity, along with a more stable, positive work environment. He&#8217;s got some changes he needs to make on his own, too.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.54em; font-size: 13px; padding: 0px;">The upside is that all of this provides him with the opportunity to become the greatest draft-bust-finds-redemption story ever. Maybe it&#8217;s not quite the same opportunity he had as a first-overall draft pick, but it&#8217;s something.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 1.54em; font-size: 13px; padding: 0px;"><a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Russell-as-a-Raider-in-one-handy-stat-100-000?urn=nfl,239764">Yahoo!</a></p>

<p><a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1966">LeBron James</a> could reportedly have a new number next season, but <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=cle">Cleveland Cavaliers</a> fans hope the words remain the same.</p>
<div><span></span></div>
<p>James filed paperwork to switch from No. 23 to No. 6, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported on Monday. He beat a Wednesday deadline to make the request.</p>
<p>The All-Star said in November that he was thinking of giving up 23 out of respect for his hero <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1035">Michael Jordan</a>, but at that time he was &#8220;50-50,&#8221; according to the newspaper.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve done it,&#8221; James told the Plain Dealer. &#8220;I already sent it in. I&#8217;m going to be No. 6.&#8221;</p>
<p><span id="more-1352"></span></p>
<p>Six is James&#8217; jersey number on the Olympic team, but the NBA does not have to grant his request.</p>
<p>James will be part of the vaunted 2010 free-agent class that includes <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1987">Dwyane Wade</a> and <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1977">Chris Bosh</a>. While Bulls fans would like to see him try to make No. 6 as legendary as No. 23 in Chicago, New York has also maneuvered to have enough cap space to sign James.</p>
<p>Cleveland can sign James to a longer, more lucrative deal, however.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In case you missed it, here are some of the highs and lows of the 2010 Winter Olympics&#8230;</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" src="http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2010/03/02/sports/02olympics_CA0/02olympics_CA0-articleLarge.jpg" alt="" width="594" height="312" /></p>
<p>VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — It was shortly before 3 p.m. on Sunday in Vancouver, and the Closing Ceremony set to begin later in the afternoon was suddenly irrelevant.</p>
<p>Sidney Crosby had just given Canada all the closure it required by slamming home the goal. And in the downtown sports bar where hundreds of us watched this gold-medal game, hundreds of arms were suddenly high in the air accompanied by a group howl that was still loud and clear 15 minutes later, even as the tequila started disappearing from the shot glasses.</p>
<p>What red-blooded, red-mittened Canadian could possibly ask for more after a somber start to their Winter Olympics?</p>
<p>Time for our own traditional closing ceremony (tequila optional):<br />
<strong><br />
BEST PERFORMANCE ON SNOW </strong></p>
<p>You could go for a medal magnet like Marit Bjoergen of Norway, who won three golds, a silver and a bronze in women’s cross country: something her coach equated to a runner winning medals from 800 meters to the marathon in the Summer Games. You could go for Bode Miller’s storming slalom run that brought him his first Olympic gold. But I’m going for Anja Paerson making it to the starting gate less than 24 hours after she launched herself much higher and farther than planned off the last jump of the women’s downhill. How Paerson avoided major injury after her brutal crash landing remains a mystery, but the even bigger surprise was seeing her — terribly sore but only slightly shaken — win a bronze medal in the super combined the next day.</p>
<p><span id="more-1347"></span></p>
<p><strong>WORST PERFORMANCE ON SNOW</strong></p>
<p>The Austrian men’s Alpine skiers — podium free in Vancouver — are the obvious choice, but at least they all made it past the first gate. Marion Rolland of France, one of the top women’s speed skiers, pushed out of the start in the women’s downhill only to fall three seconds later after losing her balance on a relatively flat slope. It was the sort of tumble a beginner takes coming off a chairlift. It was a near-insurmountable challenge to stifle nervous laughter. Not so funny was that Rolland tore knee ligaments as she tried to bounce back up to continue.</p>
<p><strong>BEST PERFORMANCE ON ICE</strong></p>
<p>Yu-na Kim was an actress with range in Vancouver: spicy and playful in her “Bond Girl” short program; elegant and reflective in her free skate. But artistry, no matter what Evgeny Plushenko thinks of the new scoring system, will only get you so far in figure skating. You still have to land those jumps on the thin edge of a blade with the world (or at least all of South Korea) watching. Kim never faltered, with her only bobble under the lights coming in Sunday’s meaningless exhibition skate when the pressure was off and her place as an all-time great secure alongside the likes of Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill and Katarina Witt.</p>
<p><strong>WORST PERFORMANCE ON ICE </strong></p>
<p>French figure skater Brian Joubert, a former men’s world champion, deserves serious consideration for his bumbling short program in which he failed to produce a combination, fell on his triple lutz, finished 18th and humbly pronounced himself “un petit con” (a little idiot). Yet even Joubert’s latest Olympic gaffes did not amount to the whopper produced by Gerhard Kemkers. The veteran Dutch speed-skating coach shouted at his prize pupil, Sven Kramer, to move to the inner lane with eight laps to go in the men’s 10,000 meters. Kramer obliged, recorded the fastest time of the day and was disqualified for an improper lane change. That was the end of Kramer’s dream of a second individual gold medal but not, or at least not yet, the end of Kemkers’s job coaching Kramer.</p>
<p><strong>BEST PERFORMANCE IN THIN AIR </strong></p>
<p>In normal circumstances, Simon Ammann sweeping both individual ski jumping events would have been more than enough to lock up this category. But Shaun White’s second run in the men’s half pipe was rare air indeed as he soared and spun and ultimately finished off his above-the-rim masterpiece by landing a double McTwist 1260, a trick that looked tricky even for White. That’s saying something. So what if he already had the gold secured after run one. This was performance art.</p>
<p><strong>WORST PERFORMANCE IN THIN AIR</strong></p>
<p>Ski jumping is to Finland what Alpine skiing is to Austria (which should give you an idea where this is heading). Though the Finns had talent and a good comeback tale with Janne Ahonen returning from retirement, they ended up making national headlines for the wrong reasons. Ahonen just missed the podium in the Normal Hill, then injured his knee. Two other Finns, Harri Olli and Janne Happonen, were disqualified during the Games for using illegal jumping suits. The Finns, as you may have guessed by now, won no medals. Javelin anyone?</p>
<p><strong>BEST PERFORMANCE ON THIN ICE </strong></p>
<p>Mike Babcock, Team Canada’s men’s hockey coach, was getting second guessed from British Columbia to Newfoundland after his all-star squad squeaked past Switzerland in the preliminary round and then got outhustled and outplayed by the United States. But Babcock appears to have as strong a resolve as he does a chin. He switched goaltenders, shuffled his lines effectively and kept telling his team to embrace the pressure, even after they blew a lead in the gold-medal game with less than 30 seconds to play. The result was Crosby’s gold-winner and an Olympic title for Babcock to go with the Stanley Cup he won in 2008 doing his regular job as coach of the Detroit Red Wings. Time for something a little stronger than that bottled water he sips on the bench.</p>
<p><strong>WORST PERFORMANCE ON THIN ICE </strong></p>
<p>With the Olympic world and others mourning the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, the International Luge Federation chose to conduct a quick investigation and issue a late-night communiqué on the day of Kumaritashvili’s death that attributed the training accident entirely to pilot error and maintained the competition the next morning. Organizers then went to work adding extra layers of padding and security to the bottom of the track. Olympic spirit indeed.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Round two of the 2010 Lakers-Celtics war is tomorrow. The Lakers will have to pull out all the stops to go up 2-0. Currently on a four-game win streak without superstar Kobe Bryant, the Lakeshow is not worried. ESPN covers the story&#8230;</p>
<p><img class="alignnone" src="http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0eWlemn2Fg2hk/610x.jpg" alt="" width="594" height="448" /></p>
<p>Lakers guard <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=110">Kobe Bryant</a> told reporters Wednesday that he is doubtful for the Lakers&#8217; Thursday game against the <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=bos">Boston Celtics</a> and expects to miss his fifth straight game, (sixth if you include the All-Star Game), because of a lack of strength and lingering pain in his left leg and ankle.</p>
<p>&#8220;Right now, it&#8217;s a no,&#8221; Bryant said. &#8220;If I wake up tomorrow and I feel drastically different then I&#8217;ll play. But, I doubt it.&#8221;</p>
<p><span id="more-1328"></span></p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s sore. I can&#8217;t push off of it enough to play so I&#8217;ll just take my time, do therapy around the clock and go after it as aggressively as I play.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bryant said that the main thing that is bothering him is strained tendons and muscles in his left leg and not so much the sprained ligament in his left ankle.</p>
<p>&#8220;The tendon is a little different,&#8221; Bryant said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not just a sprained ankle or something like that. I&#8217;ve played through sprained ankles. Tendons are a little different. They kind of have their own agenda of when they want to heal.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bryant has already gone 12 days without playing a game since scratching himself from the lineup against Portland on Feb. 6 and should he decide to sit out against the Celtics, he can push his rest period to a full 18 days before the Lakers play in Memphis on Feb. 23.</p>
<p>&#8220;It helps,&#8221; Bryant said about the sparse upcoming schedule for Los Angeles. &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t have anything to do with tomorrow. It just helps the fact that I have time to recover more. My philosophy on injuries is if you&#8217;re healthy you play. It doesn&#8217;t matter what the upcoming schedule is. If you&#8217;re good enough to go, you go.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bryant was in good spirits and joked that he still ran wind sprints with the team in the warm-up pants and flip-flops he was wearing. The fact his team is 4-0 without him and winning by an average of 13.5 per game in that span had a lot to do with his mood.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m extremely proud,&#8221; Bryant said. &#8220;I think they&#8217;re playing with a great sense of urgency and I think because of that they&#8217;re playing extremely well.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very excited about it. I go home and put my head down to sleep for a couple hours, or however long I sleep, and I&#8217;m happy because the guys are playing with a lot of confidence and playing well &#8212; they&#8217;re playing well. I sleep better when the guys are performing well.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lakers coach Phil Jackson was at peace with Bryant&#8217;s decision, stating that he thinks it will help the team in the long run.</p>
<p>&#8220;I trust him to think that he&#8217;s looking at the long picture down here and that&#8217;s good enough for us, because it&#8217;s the long picture we&#8217;re looking at,&#8221; Jackson said.</p>
<p>Bryant echoed that sentiment.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important for everybody to understand what we&#8217;re playing for,&#8221; Bryant said. &#8220;I would love to come back and play, but I&#8217;m not ready so I won&#8217;t. We want to win a championship and we have to do what&#8217;s necessary to get that job done, so if that means missing a big TNT doubleheader then so be it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lakers forward <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=996">Pau Gasol</a> said that the team realizes that this injury of Bryant&#8217;s is different from the back, groin, elbow, finger and knee maladies that he played through earlier in the season.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m guessing that this is a pretty serious deal,&#8221; Gasol said. &#8220;It&#8217;s nothing that you can push through because he&#8217;s done that on many occasions.&#8221;</p>
<p>Jackson thought that Bryant finally letting go of his perfect attendance record in Portland was the toughest part of the injury for his 12-time All-Star, but once Bryant accepted the fact that it was over, he was able to approach rehabilitation with his full attention.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think he liked having the fact that he had played consecutive games for [235] games,&#8221; Jackson said. &#8220;Once you miss one, you can&#8217;t really restart that really quickly and get back to that number without a whole lot of years put behind it, so I think it&#8217;s reasonable that he did this.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bryant&#8217;s streak was the fifth longest streak among current NBA players. It started after March 7, 2007, when he served a one-game suspension for striking <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=387">Marko Jaric</a> in the face.</p>
<p>Bryant agreed with Jackson, saying that if he was going to miss one game, he was going to miss as many games necessary to make sure he is healthy for the home stretch.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not going to have it be in vain because then I&#8217;ll just be pissed off I missed those games for no reason,&#8221; Bryant said. &#8220;Plus, the team is playing so well, I&#8217;m in no rush to get back. That&#8217;s something that they&#8217;ve told me: &#8216;When you go down, we&#8217;re going to make sure to step up and play. This way you don&#8217;t feel like you have to rush to get back.&#8217; That&#8217;s how we pick each other up.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bryant seemed at ease with his decision, so long as it helps his team complete its goal of securing a second-consecutive championship come June.</p>
<p>&#8220;Hopefully this will be the end of it,&#8221; Bryant said. &#8220;We&#8217;ll get <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=2027">Luke [Walton]</a> back [from his back injury], get myself back and hopefully we&#8217;ll have a full roster for the remainder of the year &#8230; This is getting close to money time here.&#8221;</p>

<p><a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=532">Tracy McGrady</a> has been splitting his time recently shuttling between Chicago and Houston, alternating between working out with famed athletic trainer Tim Grover and spending time with his family.</p>
<p>His only constant has been the waiting.</p>
<p>McGrady expects to play again this season, one way or another. If the Rockets trade him, he&#8217;ll report to his new team and try to show he has something left. If the Rockets don&#8217;t trade him, he&#8217;ll seek a buyout prior to March 1, allowing him to sign as a free agent with a playoff team.</p>
<p>A seven-time All-Star, McGrady is the crème de la crème of this season&#8217;s version of our annual list of the Top Non-Playing Trade Assets as we barrel toward the Feb. 18 NBA trade deadline. Technically, McGrady is probably ineligible since he&#8217;s in playing shape, he played this season, and he&#8217;s been playing ball on the side to try to stay in shape while continuing to strengthen his knee following microfracture surgery. But with the Rockets having sent him into exile, what else can you call him except a Non-Playing Trade Asset?</p>
<p>So with that clarification, let&#8217;s get right down to the meat of things with information gleaned from various team executives, agents and other heavy hitters from around the NBA.</p>
<p><span id="more-1300"></span></p>
<hr /><!--INLINE MUG--></p>
<div>
<div><img src="http://assets.espn.go.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/532.jpg" alt="McGrady" width="65" height="90" /></div>
<p><span>McGrady</span></div>
<p><!--END INLINE MUG--></p>
<h3>No. 1: Tracy McGrady, Rockets</h3>
<p>Sources with knowledge of the McGrady discussions say there are five teams realistically in play with eight days left until the deadline: New York, Washington, Chicago, Philadelphia and Phoenix.</p>
<p>Here is the situation with each:</p>
<p><strong>Knicks:</strong> They&#8217;ve come to the conclusion that Houston probably isn&#8217;t going to take <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1717">Jared Jeffries</a> off their hands, but they&#8217;re still willing to offer several of their own expiring contracts &#8212; a list that includes <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=308">Al Harrington</a>, <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=356">Larry Hughes</a> and <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=2377">Chris Duhon</a>.</p>
<p>But the Rockets want rookie <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=3994">Jordan Hill</a>, too, and New York is currently saying no. What the Knicks will have in their corner at the 11th hour is $3 million in cash and a willingness to take on <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1998">Brian Cook</a>, which would help Houston shave $2.62 million off its payroll to get beneath the luxury tax line, bringing them another $4-plus million when luxury tax payments are divvied up this summer among non-taxpaying teams.</p>
<p><strong>Wizards:</strong> Houston would be open to doing a lopsided deal for <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1705">Caron Butler</a>, <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1000">Brendan Haywood</a> and filler, offering Washington little more than enormous cap relief. But the Wizards, understandably, want more than that if they are going to part with Butler, and they&#8217;re still going to have to find a way to reconcile with (unlikely) or trade (more likely) <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=974">Gilbert Arenas</a> before the start of next season. Still, one source said Tuesday that a Washington deal for McGrady has the most potential of coming to fruition.</p>
<p><strong>Bulls:</strong> McGrady appeals to them because he would get them far enough under the salary cap to make a run at two max free agents this summer, but the Rockets do not want to take on Kirk Hinrich&#8217;s contract (owed $17 million through &#8216;11-12). If Chicago offered the expiring contracts of <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=556">Brad Miller</a>, <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=3032">Tyrus Thomas</a> and <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1821">Jannero Pargo</a>, Houston might be more apt to bite.</p>
<p><strong>76ers:</strong> Yes, there have been discussions between the teams that have included <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=2386">Andre Iguodala</a>, but no, the 76ers aren&#8217;t going to give him away for long-term cap relief and nothing else. As of Tuesday, one source described these talks as dormant, if not dead.</p>
<p><strong>Suns:</strong> Phoenix was described as a wild-card team in any and all McGrady trade scenarios, because a three-way deal involving McGrady and Amare Stoudemire as the main principles can be brokered to get all three teams what they are seeking.</p>

<h3>No. 2: <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=831">Wally Szczerbiak</a>, unrestricted free agent (Cavs)</h3>
<p>The Cavaliers hold his Larry Bird rights, meaning they can sign him to a three-year deal, even one with an atrociously high starting salary (he made $13 million last season) in which only the first season is guaranteed (and prorated), and then immediately trade him &#8212; presumably for the &#8220;stretch 4&#8243; they have been pursuing, the guy <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=1966">LeBron James</a> wants them to add: <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=385">Antawn Jamison</a>.</p>
<p>(Wally at $8M plus <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=3437">J.J. Hickson</a> at $1.43M for Jamison would work under salary cap rules, and the Cavs could keep <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=362">Zydrunas Ilgauskas</a>. But the Wizards know as well as anyone that LeBron is pushing for this deal, and they&#8217;d use that leverage to ask for more.)</p>
<p>Szczerbiak, who underwent knee surgery three months ago to clean out loose materials, is currently employed as a studio analyst for CBS&#8217; college sports channel.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m working out trying to get my knee better, enjoying the new gig and seeing if it&#8217;ll lead to something in the future,&#8221; Szczerbiak told ESPN.com, adding that he wouldn&#8217;t hesitate to report to a new team and attempt a comeback if he was part of a sign-and-trade deal.</p>
<p>&#8220;Of course, if that opportunity arises, I&#8217;d have to go take the physical &#8212; that&#8217;s the drill &#8212; and see what happens. I definitely wouldn&#8217;t be opposed to it. I&#8217;m moving around well, but we&#8217;d have to see as far as stuff like back-to-backs. It might take some time to see where I&#8217;m at,&#8221; Szczerbiak said.</p>

<h3>No. 3: New York&#8217;s 2010 first-round pick (unprotected)</h3>
<p>The rights to this pick belong to the <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=uth">Utah Jazz</a>, who acquired it from Phoenix after Isiah Thomas sent it to the Suns seven years ago to acquire <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=509">Stephon Marbury</a>. Utah general manager Kevin O&#8217;Connor always says he will listen to any and all offers, but there&#8217;s no realistic chance the Jazz &#8212; who have been waiting patiently for five years for this pick to come their way &#8212; will part with what could end up as a very high lottery pick.</p>
<hr />
<div><img src="http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/nba/med/pho.gif" border="0" alt="" hspace="0" vspace="0" /></div>
<h3>No. 4: Phoenix&#8217;s 2010 first-round pick (unprotected)</h3>
<p>This piece of property belongs to the <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=okc">Oklahoma City Thunder</a>, though it is losing value with each passing day as the Suns have recovered from their mini-slump to win five in a row to rise to fifth place in the West.</p>
<p>When you consider that Oklahoma City also has an expendable $7.9 million expiring contract (<a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=851">Etan Thomas</a>) which can be combined with Matt Harpring&#8217;s insurance-covered $6.5 million deal, and if you postulate that the Thunder would also be willing to give up their own pick or the Suns&#8217; pick to acquire a stud, they could be sneaky big-time players a week from Thursday.</p>
<hr />
<div><img src="http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/nba/med/okc.gif" border="0" alt="" hspace="0" vspace="0" /></div>
<h3>No. 5: OKC&#8217;s other extra draft picks/assets/flexibility</h3>
<p>We just mentioned Harpring, who was acquired along with <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=4001">Eric Maynor</a> from the Jazz on Dec. 22, and whose contract is being paid by an insurance company. Also, Harpring (because he was traded into open cap space) is exempt from what&#8217;s known as the two-month rule, which would normally prohibit him from being combined with another OKC player in an outgoing package for two months.</p>
<p>We should also mention that the Thunder hold the rights to Minnesota&#8217;s second-round pick, which will likely fall somewhere between No. 31 and No. 35, plus an extra second-round pick (Chicago&#8217;s, Houston&#8217;s or Portland&#8217;s, whichever is the least favorable), plus their own second-rounder, provided it is in the top 45 (otherwise it goes to Dallas).</p>

<h3>No. 6: Rights to overseas players</h3>
<p>Minnesota GM David Kahn insists he has no plans to trade the draft rights to Ricky Rubio, who cannot get out of his contract with FC Barcelona until 2011, or 6-foot-11 Serbian center Nikola Pekovic (31st pick, 2008).</p>
<p>In San Antonio, the Spurs currently plan to have Brazilian forward Tiago Splitter aboard next season, three years after they drafted him 28th in the first round. (Splitter has been waiting all that time so he will not have to sign under the rookie scale, which would have limited his salary to $900,000 this season.)</p>
<p>The Spurs can now sign him with mid-level or bi-annual exception money, and Portland is now in the same situation with Petteri Koponen, who went No. 30 in 2007.</p>
<p>Orlando still holds the rights to Fran Vazquez (11th overall pick in 2005), who also is no longer covered by the rookie scale, and it would seem Greek point guard Nick Calathes might be expendable now that Dallas owner Mark Cuban has deemed <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=3963">Rodrigue Beaubois</a> untouchable.</p>
<hr />
<div><img src="http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/nba/med/orl.gif" border="0" alt="" hspace="0" vspace="0" /></div>
<h3>No. 7: Large trade exceptions</h3>
<p>A trade exception is special because it can be used to acquire a player while getting around the rule requiring the other team to send back a player or players in return whose salaries are within 125 percent of the traded player&#8217;s salary. In other words, you can trade garbage, such as a conditional second-round pick or the rights to Yuri Eurostiff, and take back a player whose salary fits within the size of the trade exception. It is this particular rule that allows cap guys to get creative when coming up with multi-team trade scenarios.</p>
<p>The largest trade exceptions belong to Orlando (a $6.86 exception which expires July 9 from the <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=862">Hedo Turkoglu</a> sign-and-trade deal) and Utah (a $6.5 million exception that expires Dec. 22 from the Harpring deal.) But with both of those teams over the luxury tax threshold, those exceptions become much more viable and pliable commodities after July 1.</p>
<p>Also, Miami has a $4.26 million exception (<a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=2165">Marcus Banks</a>) that will expire this coming Monday, Feb. 15; Dallas has a brand-new $2.9 exception from trading <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=2433">Kris Humphries</a> to New Jersey; Chicago has two $1.9 million exceptions (<a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=2456">Andres Nocioni</a>, <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=3028">Thabo Sefolosha</a>) that expire next Thursday; and the Lakers have a $2.5 exception (<a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=549">Chris Mihm</a>) that is use-it-or-lose-it by Feb. 18.</p>

<h3>No. 8: Grizzlies&#8217; three 2010 first-round picks</h3>
<p>Memphis has its own pick, the Nuggets&#8217; pick and the Lakers&#8217; pick. For what it&#8217;s worth, the Grizzlies also own Toronto&#8217;s 2016 second-round pick (within the next decade we&#8217;ll know whether that was truly an asset or not).</p>
<p>Other teams that have multiple first-rounders are the Nets (their own and Dallas&#8217;), Thunder (own and Suns&#8217;), Heat (own and Toronto&#8217;s) and Timberwolves (see No. 9 on this list).</p>
<hr />
<div><img src="http://a.espncdn.com/i/teamlogos/nba/med/min.gif" border="0" alt="" hspace="0" vspace="0" /></div>
<h3>No. 9: Timberwolves&#8217; three 2010 first-round picks</h3>
<p>Minnesota has its own pick, Charlotte&#8217;s pick and Utah&#8217;s pick, which seemingly should earn them the No. 8 spot on this list. But what knocks them down one notch is one of Kevin McHale&#8217;s bad trade legacies &#8212; the Wolves still owe the Clippers a first-rounder (protected 1-10 in 2010 and 2011, unprotected in 2012) from the 2005 <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=138">Sam Cassell</a>-<a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=387">Marko Jaric</a> trade.</p>

<h3>No. 10: <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=512">Donyell Marshall</a></h3>
<p>Let&#8217;s say the Sixers needed an extra salary to make a deal work numbers-wise. They could look no further than their own broadcast table, where Marshall is doing color commentary. He could be signed-and-traded for a pro-rated share of the veteran&#8217;s minimum, and he would then have to report to his new team and go through the same charade as <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=539">Aaron McKie</a> and <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=869">Keith Van Horn</a> did when they were used as sign-and-trade chips in the <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=996">Pau Gasol</a> and <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=429">Jason Kidd</a> deals, respectively.</p>

<h3>No. 11: <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=3197">Javaris Crittenton</a></h3>
<p>He has been suspended by commissioner David Stern for the remainder of the season, and his contract expires June 30. But there is no rule preventing a team from trading a suspended player, and he could be included as an outgoing piece of a Wizards trade to make the salaries and/or roster slots match. The acquiring team would then presumably waive him, and 48 hours later Crittenton would be free to sign overseas while serving his NBA misconduct suspension for the infamous gun incident in the Wizards&#8217; locker room.</p>

<h3>No. 12: <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=566">Cuttino Mobley</a>&#8217;s expiring $9.5 million contract.</h3>
<p>This insurance-covered contract would have been higher on this list if not for the following: The <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/clubhouse?team=nyk">New York Knicks</a> have applied for salary cap relief (which would cut their luxury tax bill by $9.5 million), and Mobley (who retired because of a heart condition) cannot be dealt until the Knicks get a ruling on their cap relief petition &#8212; and New York is frustrated at receiving no indication from the league office on when that ruling might come.</p>

<p>True fans of the Winter Olympics will need more than a television broadcast schedule to stay current, especially if NBC&#8217;s Olympics coverage (across local and cable channels) doesn&#8217;t show your favorite sports or shows them on a tape-delayed broadcast that leaves you 3 hours behind your Twitter feed. Fortunately, we have some tips to help you use your PC and smartphone to get the coverage you need&#8211;regardless of where in the world the right coverage may air.</p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica; color: #000000;"><strong style="font-size: 15px;">NBC</strong><br />
<!-- BREAK --></span></p>
<p>NBC has the U.S. broadcast rights to the 2010 Winter Olympics, so the best place for U.S. viewers to start looking for coverage is at the <a href="http://www.nbcolympics.com/">NBCOlympics.com</a> Web site. (We previously covered the network&#8217;s streaming options for the <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/147273/manage_your_summer_olympics_viewing_experience.html">2008 Beijing Summer Olympics</a>.) Prepare your PC by ensuring that it has the most recent versions of the Adobe Flash and <a href="http://financial.washingtonpost.com/custom/wpost/html-qcn.asp?dispnav=business&amp;mwpage=qcn&amp;symb=MSFT&amp;nav=el">Microsoft</a> Silverlight plug-ins; you&#8217;ll need them to view the slideshows and to stream video. If you don&#8217;t mind following NBC&#8217;s online streaming schedule, it offers a fairly good way to watch the Olympics. NBC even provides a BOSS button that brings up a generic Windows desktop&#8211;complete with empty spreadsheet&#8211;in case you want to view the events discreetly while at work.</p>
<div id="inline-ad" style="margin-bottom: 4px; padding-right: 10px; float: left;">
<div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"> </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span>If you have problems streaming from NBC&#8217;s Website, confirm that your browser is set to accept third-party cookies: In Firefox, go to <em>Tools, Options, Privacy</em> and check <em><em>Accept</em> cookies from sites</em> and <em>Accept third-party cookies</em>; in Chrome, choose <em>Options, Under the Hood, Content Settings, Cookies</em> and uncheck <em>Block all third-party cookies without exception</em>; in Safari, go to <em>Preferences, Security,</em> and check the <em>Always</em> radio button; in IE, open the <em>Internet Options</em> control panel, select <em>Privacy, Advanced</em>, check <em>Override automatic cookie policy</em>, and leave both listings on Accept.</div>
<p><script type="text/javascript">// <![CDATA[

{
document.write('</div>
<p>') ;
}
// ]]&gt;</script></div>
<p>The NBCOlympics Website has plenty of other gizmos besides streaming video to keep you coming back. For example, you can choose among many <a href="http://www.nbcolympics.com/rss/index.html">Olympics RSS</a> feeds organized by topic, sport, country, or nation, opt for <a href="http://www.nbcolympics.com/alerts/index.htmx">alerts via SMS or e-mail</a>, and get <a href="http://www.nbcolympics.com/getlocal/tvlistings.html">local Olympic TV listings</a> sorted by provider. If you have a smartphone, you can supplement your PC coverage with upcoming apps for the iPhone or BlackBerry. A mobile-optimized version of the NBCOlympics site will be available, as will live streaming video via <a href="http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv-listings/mobile-tv.html">Olympics 2Go</a>.</p>
<p><span id="more-1289"></span></p>
<p>If you live outside the United States, you won&#8217;t be able to stream video from NBC without using a workaround, since NBC&#8217;s broadcast rights don&#8217;t extend beyond the United States. To watch from another country, you&#8217;ll need a proxy server or virtual private network (VPN) that is based in the United States and can trick the site into thinking that you&#8217;re there, too.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, most free proxy servers are designed for simple Web browsing and can&#8217;t handle streaming video. Instead, try <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/userreviews/fid,71209/userreviews.html">Hotspot Shield by AnchorFree</a> (warning: it&#8217;s anyone&#8217;s guess as to how their servers will handle a deluge of Olympic traffic). At this writing, it&#8217;s unclear whether mobile streaming options will be similarly region-locked; if they are, the <a href="http://hotspotshield.com/clientless/iphone/">iPhone version of Hotspot Shield</a> might help.</p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica; color: #000000;"> <strong style="font-size: 15px;">International Broadcasts</strong><br />
<!-- BREAK --></span></p>
<p>If you turn your nose up at Yankee-centric Olympics coverage (too much fluff, not enough international competition), consider seeking out an international broadcast feed from another country. Unfortunately, just as U.S. fans abroad can have trouble picking up NBC&#8217;s coverage, broadcast rights issues can prevent a viewer inside the United States from watching, say, a BBC broadcast.</p>
<p>Among the best international streaming options are Canada&#8217;s domestic coverage from <a href="http://www.ctvolympics.ca/">CTVOlympics.ca</a> (in English) and <a href="http://www.rdsolympiques.ca/">RDSolympiques.ca</a> (in French), both of which will host up to 14 live streams from Canadian TV networks as well as providing live coverage of every sport from start to finish. Meanwhile, the BBC will offer live BBC Two coverage streams and four Web-only streams via the <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport">BBC Sport Web site</a> and mobile streaming via <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/web/">BBC Mobile</a>. Viewers in the United States won&#8217;t be able to watch any of the Canadian or British streams without a little effort, however.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because the BBC and CTV, like NBC, have contracted with the International Olympics Committee for broadcast rights to specific geographical regions only. To watch direct-from-the-source international streams, you may have to do some googling for a VPN service located in your country of choice.</p>
<p>Some free (usually ad-supported) VPN services exist&#8211;<a href="http://thefreevpn.com/">TheFreeVPN.com</a>, for example, has a free Canadian VPN server, but it&#8217;s capped at 250 users&#8211;but you&#8217;re likely to have better luck with a paid service, since they typically offer higher bandwidth and a more stable connection. Once you&#8217;ve logged into the VPN, you should be able to access the desired Website normally, though you may notice a bit more delay than usual because data traffic has to jump through a few extra hoops.</p>
<p>Paid VPN services typically range in cost from $5 to $15 per month; some services have free trials, day passes, and other offers that permit you to test the service before committing to a full month of it. Also, make sure that the VPN service doesn&#8217;t impose a bandwidth limit; many such services offer unlimited bandwidth for a reasonable price, but some put a cap on usage&#8211;and you may exceed that cap quickly with streaming video.</p>
<p><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica; color: #000000;"><strong style="font-size: 15px;">Peer-to-Peer Streams</strong></span></p>
<p>If you simply can&#8217;t find a satisfactory stream from one of the international networks, you&#8217;ll have to hunt for an independent, fan-generated feed. Luckily, a handful of Web sites and apps are dedicated to helping you find those feeds: <a href="http://www.sopcast.com/">SopCast</a> is a great source for sports feeds in general (app installation required), while <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/">Ustream</a> and <a href="http://www.justin.tv/">Justin.tv</a> let you stream over the Web. Another alternative is <a href="http://www.tvunetworks.com/">TVU Networks</a>, which offers a Web interface (this requires a TVU plugin), a Mac/Windows app, and a <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/appguide/app.html?id=255178&amp;expand=false">TVUPlayer iPhone</a> app ($4.99); the various TVU options give you access to live TV from 900 channels worldwide.</p>
<p>Fan-generated streams typically consist of TV broadcasts mirrored by individuals, so video quality and reliability tend to be worse than you&#8217;d get with a big network stream. And since these streams originate in other countries, the reporting may not be in your preferred language. Another caveat: The hosting service may (and often will) shut down streams of high-profile sporting events on behalf of the broadcaster, so you may find yourself having to jump from stream to stream until you find one that stays around.</p>
<p>Sites such as Justin.tv include a chat window where fans can advertise private, password-protected channels in public streams. These are less likely to be shut down, but your success may vary. With luck, you may be able to find enthusiasts who avoid these sites and host their own feeds, which you can then stream with <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,64558/description.html">VLC</a> (to do so, copy the feed URL and then choose <em>Open Network Stream</em>) or Windows Media Player, but finding them generally means spending hours prowling forum communities for links.</p>

<div><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"> </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica; color: #000000;"><strong style="font-size: 15px;">Twitter</strong></span></div>

</strong></span></div>
<div>Twitter can provide an excellent supplement to your video streaming, particularly if you want the latest results without clogging up your e-mail inbox, SMS inbox, or RSS feeds. NBC operates an <a href="http://www.nbcolympics.com/olympicpulse/index.html">Olympic Pulse</a> page that covers lots of tweets by athletes and analysts (from the United States, generally); but stick to @NBCOlympicZone if you want the coverage (complete with lists of athletes, organized by region) to come from your Twitter client of choice.</div>
<p><script type="text/javascript">// <![CDATA[
if ( show_doubleclick_ad &#038;&#038; ( adTemplate &#038; INLINE_ARTICLE_AD ) == INLINE_ARTICLE_AD &#038;&#038; inlineAdGraf )
{
placeAd('ARTICLE',commercialNode,20,'inline=y;!category=microsoft;',true) ;
}
// ]]&gt;</script> <script type="text/javascript">// <![CDATA[

{
document.write('</div>
<p>') ;
}
// ]]&gt;</script></div>
<p>Other television networks worldwide plan to provide Twitter coverage, and that isn&#8217;t bound by broadcasting constraints. For example, <span id="apture_prvw1"><span style="background-position: right -1147px;"> </span><a href="http://twitter.com/CTVOlympics">@CTVOlympics</a></span> supplies all of the coverage from the Canadian broadcasters, plus lists for international athletes, Canadian athletes, and organizations. Even the International Olympics Committee tweets from <span id="apture_prvw2"><span style="background-position: right -1147px;"> </span><a href="http://twitter.com/Olympics">@Olympics</a></span>; <span id="apture_prvw3"><span style="background-position: right -1147px;"> </span><a href="http://twitter.com/OlympicHealth">@OlympicHealth</a></span> provides all kinds of neat tidbits about how the various Olympians train.</p>
<p>You don&#8217;t have to rely on these sources, of course. Just check out the Trending Topics list (on the right-hand side of the main Twitter page) to see what the most common names and phrases are; if you&#8217;re rooting for a particular team or region, you can set your Trending Topics list to cover specific cities or countries.</p>
